Skoda historically didn’t have the best reputation for quality cars, but since becoming part of the Volkswagen group they are greatly improving their reputation as a quality alternative to much more expensive cars. What does the Skoda name represent? Where was it established? And what does the VW Group have planned for the future of Skoda.
Skoda was first established as an arms manufacturer in the Czech Republic in 1859. In 1924 Skoda works were looking to branch out from its arms manufacturing, and bought up a firm called Laurin & Klement, who after starting out as a bike manufacturer (credited as the creator of the first motorcycle), were now producing trucks. By 1938 Skoda had a 39% share of the Czech car market.
Skoda Auto Group is made up of four subsidiaries. Skoda Auto Deutschland, Slovensko, Polska, and India Privat Ltd. In total these four subsidiaries sold 684,226 cars in 2009. Skoda say they want to more than double this figure. With the increase in popularity in China and Britain, it should be easily achievable. We can really see Skoda growing as people feel the financial pinch of the failing economy, and believe it could end up one of VW Groups most important brands.
Interesting Skoda fact - In the early days the Motorsport division of Skoda was relatively small compared to other manufacturers, and the cars they were using were outdated in comparison to their competition. However they still managed to regularly finish in the top 10, and took the under 1300cc title in the British RAC Rally for 17 years running. Since VW group purchased Skoda they have competed in many events, gaining good positions and occasional wins in all categories entered.
