The Volvo S40 was never going to be called the S40. Originally Volvo intended to call it simply the S4, but Audi beat them to the punch by naming the sportier A4 the S4. The S40 shares a few common parts with the Mitsubishi Carisma and Lancer Evo III, as well as the Proton Waja. Volvo used the S40 to compete in both the British Touring Car Championship, and the Swedish Touring Car Championship.
With the exception of one engine option (1.9 Turbo diesel engine), the S40 was a complete new car design. Perhaps it was the new design that helped the S40 to become the first car to be awarded 4 stars in the Euro-NCAP tests. The second generation was released in 2004, and brought a much-needed update to the ageing looks. The new shape was well received, and was even nominated for the World Car of the Year award.
