Humble beginnings

The Land Rover name originated as the name of a single model launched by Rover in 1948. The models success saw it evolve into a range of 4x4 models, and eventually become a marque in its own right in 1978, 30 years after the initial model was launched. It was after BMW’s acquisition in 2000 that the Land Rover marque was separated from the main Rover group, when BMW sold it to Ford.

Survival of the fittest

Throughout its history the Rover group has undergone many changes of ownership, and had many financial troubles. Through it all Land Rover has remained popular, and kept its own models in the public eye for the right reasons. The current owner is Tata Motors, who also own Jaguar, and seem to be bringing new life and success to both of the iconic British brands.
