Isuzu Motors Ltd has a rocky past littered with success and failure in equal measure. But what do we really know about the Tokyo based manufacturer? How did the company come about? What products have been successful? And what does the future hold for them?
Isuzu Motors Ltd didn’t come into existence until 1949. They had been trading prior to this, but as collaboration between Tokyo Ishikawajima Shipbuilding and Engineering Company and Tokyo Gas and Electric Company. Throughout the 1930’s they established themselves as one of the biggest manufacturers of diesel engines. They also produced a car (the A9) under license from English firm Wolseley.
The future of the Isuzu badge appears to be mainly in commercial endeavours. The Truck side of the UK operation has been growing steadily since it was founded in 1996. It now supplies whole fleets of trucks directly to large companies, as well as individual sales. Whilst the vehicles are still assembled here in Europe, they are manufactured in Japan. They will also focus more heavily on manufacturing economical diesel engines.
Interesting Isuzu fact - Isuzu ran a series of adverts featuring a character called Joe Isuzu. Comedian David Leisure played the character. The adverts were a success, and Joe Isuzu became a well-recognised funny character. They featured Joe Isuzu making outlandish claims about the vehicles capabilities, whilst subtitles provided actual figures, and helped to provide the odd punch line to Joe Isuzu’s jokes.
Would you pay massively over the odds for something? No! Then why settle for high main dealer prices when the cheaper way to get the car parts and spares you need is so easy?
