The Original E Number

The 5 Series was originally a replacement for the old New Class BMW’s, and received the 5 Series designation because it was their 5th model of the new era. It was also the first BMW to use the development number preceded by an E, with the first ever one known as the E12. It has always been a popular choice amongst executives, and those seeking a luxury status symbol.

Executive Gets Sporty

Just like its smaller sibling, the 5 Series enjoyed a tune up from the Motorsport division of BMW, giving birth to the M5. The Motorsport division didn’t do things by half, and used the engine from the BMW M1, making the first M5 the fastest production saloon of its day. The modern M5 utilises an M Sport button to turn everything sporty, meaning under normal conditions it can maintain much of its luxury feel.
