BMW might market their models as the Ultimate Driving Machine, but the 3 Series is definitely their ultimate model. It has outsold all of the other cars in BMW’s range. Although primarily a compact executive car, its reputation for reliability, performance, comfort and luxury has given it a mass appeal. BMW owners tend to be very loyal to the brand.
In 1987, twelve years after the 3 Series was initially released, BMW introduced us to the iconic M3. Developed by BMW’s own Motorsport division, the M3 proved popular in all the available body styles, which included the Coupe, Saloon, and Convertible. It has a huge following, and has reached a cult status amongst the tuning community.
Common and potential problems of the BMW 3 series
The BMW 3 Series is BMW’s most successful ever model. It has been in production since 1975, and has had 6 incarnations. It has won numerous awards throughout its history and remains a firm favourite in its market sector.
Known as the E36, it was manufactured between 1990 and 1999. It was available initially as a salon. This was closely followed by the coupe and cabriolet. Eventually it was also available as an estate car. This model saw the M3 become available as a 4-door saloon for the first time. It also saw the introduction of VANOS, BMW’s variable valve timing system. Unlike its predecessor the E30, the E36 proved to be one of the most problematic.
Electronic issues seem really common on this car, so be sure to check everything electric, as most owners report multiple failures.
The plastics and other materials used are often reported as not being to BMW’s usual high standard. Many experienced door panels and dashes featuring bits falling off.
As this was the first generation to feature VANOS it was inevitably going to have teething problems. There are reports of failure of the VANOS system as well as just being generally noise.
Ball joints problems seem more common on this model than the other models.
Some owners experienced problems with the gearbox. This is due to the rear control arm bushings wearing. The parts manufactured after 1996 are much sturdier, so even if your car is pre 1996, be sure to use post 1996 parts.
First on sale in 1998, but billed as a 1999 model, it was produced until 2006. The fourth generation was designated the E46. It was initially available as a saloon, but the coupe and estate versions quickly followed. The M3 variant didn’t appear until 2000. In 2002 over half a million E44 3 Series were sold. Most problems on the E46 seemed to get ironed out pretty quickly by BMW.
Cooling systems can be prone to cause problems. It is recommended to never leave a water pump for more than 60k miles, and to ensure the radiator is changed before every 100k miles.
The electric window regulators have caused problems also, especially for those who slam there doors a lot.
There have been reports of electrical niggles, such as the radio display. But nothing compared to the electrical faults of previous models.
Many owners reported having problems with the sunroof.
This model was produced between 2005 and 2012, and was designated the E90. The estate version was known as the E91, whilst the coupe was an E92. Unsurprisingly the convertible was known as the E93. This model was the first to feature a hard top convertible, and also the first to feature a turbocharged engine. In 2007 the E90 recorded record sales of over 550,000 vehicles, and was the 7th most popular car in the UK.
Gearbox. Some owners have reported jerky shifting from the automatic gearbox. So if you’re considering an automatic be sure to test drive it.
Sticking door handles – BMW initially said this was due to the incorrect paint being used on internals. However, whilst BMW replaced the door handles, most owners discover that a healthy amount of WD-40 cured the problem.
Some diesel models suffered from a flat spot in the power delivery. BMW introduced a software upgrade to combat it, but many vehicles may not have had the upgrade performed.
Run flat tyres were common on 3 Series of the time. Many customers complained that the harder sidewalls reduced the ride quality of the car, and replaced them with normal tyres. If your ride is a bit harsh it is definitely worth a check.
Noisy windscreen wipers seem to be a very common issue. Replacing the wipers can rectify it.
Injectors and coil packs seem to cause regular problems. BMW recognised this as a manufacturing issue and replaced them under warranty.
Out of all the problems we came across when looking at the E90 models, we did notice they seem to be far more on diesel models. The petrol models of the time produced far fewer problems.
The newest incarnation of the 3 series no longer uses the usual designation, and is instead known by the development number F30. It has been available since February 2012 until the present day. The current range is going to feature a hybrid that has been developed with GM (General Motors). Being only just over 12 months old, it has been hard to find any recurring problems.
If you have read this whole guide then you will know that it is always worth checking the electrics on any BMW. We have already seen some early reports of electrical niggles with the CD/MP3 player, as well as a wiper malfunction which is linked to a control module.
Some owners also reported a problem with the car stalling. BMW quickly addressed the problem and released updated software. If you would rather not take it into the dealers, you can even download it yourself to a USB stick and plug it into the cars centre armrest to perform the update.
Many BMW owners seem to suffer from annoying electrical problems. Because of the unique way they are wired the symptoms might not appear where the problem is. One customer had recurring problems with his dashboard; BMW finally traced the problem to a faulty CD changer in the boot. So the advice is to check all the electrics thoroughly, and don’t presume a small failure will be an easy fix. If in doubt, get it checked.
